I found this article, from a British publication that is, if anything, slightly to the right (at least economically), spot on when considering our American political culture.

The way I understand it, things like conspiracy theories come from us using the part of our brain that helps us make quick decisions with little time and little information under immediate stress in contexts where we have access to time, information and are not under immediate stress.

The same part of our brains that evolved to recognize patterns quickly for survival purposes... and which have given rise to superstition and religion for millenia.

I think the article was more about the odd fact that the US seems to tolerate such unfounded craziness in the public political sphere as a substitute for actual, rational debate.
